Nothing Less Than a Mind for God
Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus.
Paul is telling the people of Philippi that they could and should think like the Lord. How did the Lord think?
He loved the Father, He was humble, he did not fear losing His position, He was willing to serve the lowliest, He was obedient, not trying to have His own way but always seeking to please the Lord. He was devoted to whatever His Father wished. He had made up His mind to please Him.
This is where we decide who we will be and who we will follow. It is here we choose to live for the things of the world or the things of God.
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
The choice we make moment by moment is what will we think about. If we truly want to live according to God then we need to fill our brains with the things of God rather than the things of the world.
The book of Romans says:
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God what is good and acceptable and perfect.
We are transformed as we renew (renovate, mend, revitalize, revive, and recharge) our thinking. That means we have to be very intentional about what we do between our ears.
I used to have a verse of Scripture on my television. It said, I will set no worthless thing before my eyes. That pretty much cuts out most of what is on the tube but the heart of it is a decision to regulate what goes in our thinking and feed it with what nourishes.
How to feed your head
That seems to be an obvious choice but too often we don't read Scripture for ourselves but rely on our pastor or a teacher to read it for us and tell us what it says. Scripture is a letter of love from our Beloved. He tells us who He is and of His desire for us, His plans for restoration, the future He has in store.
How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! That is what David said about the word of God and He didn't have all that we have. After years of reading I find more depth, more sweetness, more knowing of God, more, more. If you are not in the Word, the Word is not in you. Get in it.
Okay, you hated history in school but in order to understand the Bible we need to know what was going on in the world at the times it was written. There are some easy, really interesting books on this that will make what you read so much more understandable. Start with Walk Through The Bible (see resources at bottom of page). It will give you a short and sweet history, an outline of the book, key themes and words and how Christ is found in that book. Very cool
Your Word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against you. When we memorize the Word, it is there for us when we need it. We were made to hold the Word of God so it is not as difficult as you think. When you come across a verse and you feel a tug at your heart about it, then write it down, read it often, carry it with you and let it find it's way into your heart.
The word just means the study of God. It is putting together the themes and messages of the 66 books of Scripture into specific areas. Such as: the person of God, the works of God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, salvation, the church, sin, etc. What does the Word tell us about a particular area. This is theology. There are some very easy to read and understand books on this.
Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words. Daniel was heard by God as soon as He prayed and you are heard as well. It is with a humble heart that we come before Him, with astonishment that He waits to hear from us and with expectation of understanding more of who He is, and, hopefully more of our situation. Prayer, being intentionally before God, will transform you.
Our lineage back to Christ holds many who have struggled as we do, who have had doubts and fears and struggles and have sought the Lord. The stories of those who have gone before us are not of superhuman holier than thou types but people like us, human, frail, but who love the Lord. They forge a path for us and encourage us as we travel the road.
I'm not talking politics here. Christian is one who follows Christ. He valued all people so a Christian worldview values them as well and seeks how to serve them. He created this world, so a Christian worldview would include being a good manager of this planet, not worshiping it, but caring for it. Pick a topic, think with the mind of Christ and you will have His worldview. Christ always sought to glorify His Father and that would be a good place to look at the world.
Time with God
We all need time to sit with the Lord, process, reason, read and think with Him. Watch the news, read the paper, and seek Him and His view and heart. Go over your day before and after it starts and look for His perspective on what could have been different, what pleased Him and where you can grow. Make it your habit to live With God.
Contend with darkness
Whether we want to deal with it or not, we live in a spiritual war zone. The enemy of God seeks to steal, kill and destroy. He may go after your heart, your marriage, your kids, neighbors, career, country. We need to stay close to Christ and be ready with the truth. If we don't know it, then we are going to get hurt. Ephesians says to put on your armor every day. We need to read and understand that passage as well as read and understand the strategy of the enemy. We don't have to fear him but we need to protect our minds from deception.
Love for God and His Truth
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. If we make up our minds to love God then we will also be making up our minds to know His truth, protect ourselves from lies and learn to live from the mind of Christ.
